University funds
On the one hand, University funds consist of the contribution of the Canton of Zurich and the contributions of the federal government as well as the other cantons (basic funding). On the other hand, we generate income by providing services as well as by collecting tuition fees.
The Canton of Zurich finances us with an annual global budget of around 730 mCHF (2023). It is negotiated with the canton of Zurich every year on the basis of the economic situation and the tax base. The economic situation of the Canton of Zurich therefore impacts our financial development.
The amount of the federal contribution according to the Higher Education Promotion and Coordination Act (HFKG) depends on a political process, the amount of the total contribution as well as the performance-related contributions (70% teaching performance, 30% research performance) based on the corresponding distribution keys.

The contributions of the other cantons according to the Intercantonal University Agreement (IUV) are derived from the number of students sent in each case and the corresponding contribution rate depending on the subject group. With the IUV revision, the following rates will apply from 2022:
- I: Humanities and social sciences: CHF 9'720 (p.a.).
- II: Exact / natural sciences, preclinical: CHF 23'350 (p.a.)
- III: Clinic: CHF 46'700 (p.a.)
Approximately 10% of the annual income is generated by the provision of services (e.g. animal hospital, center for dental medicine, institute for forensic medicine or university museums).
At just under 34 mCHF per year, tuition fees account for around 2% of our total revenue.
